Writer/director/carb-lover Kevin Smith is soliciting money from fans to fund his next box office failure. The man who once managed to give us one of the greatest comedies of all time—Clerks—by maxing out his own credit cards is currently setting up a website to accept donations for his pet horror project Red State.

Smith tells Cinssu:

We’re kind of creating this website. We’re seeing if it works to set up and collect donations. It becomes a weird tax nightmare, though…It sounded like such an easy thing online…but now there’s lots of checks and balances to make sure we can do it, but if that’s the case, I would be into it, and I’ll match it. Whatever you raise on line, like fuck it, you put it up, I’ll put it up.

We’re gonna make it. It’s gonna happen. By hook or by crook, with my pennies or the pennies of the audience. God bless them. Motherfuckers want to see the movie so badly that they’re willing to pay for it with their own money? Absolutely, put their name in the credits and that movie will be a reality.

OK, Smith, tell ya what. The way I see it, you owe me $40 for Zack & Miri, Jersey Girl, Dogma, and Mallrats. Keep it. Consider it my donation to Red State, you cheap rich bastard.

If you’re a fan of NBC’s over-hyped sitcom “30 Rock,” you will recognize actress Katrina Bowden as scantly-clad assistant Cerie Xerox. Those of us who find a bowl of turds more amusing than Tina Fey and company, however, are just getting to know the 21-year-old star, namely through her roles in 2009’s survival-frightener The Shortcut and this year’s horror-comedy Tucker and Dale VS. Evil (see picture above).

Tucker and Dale premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and quickly acquired a Canadian distribution deal through Maple Pictures. No word yet on who will be handling U.S. distribution.

Bowden stars in the film as a sexy coed who is rescued by the film’s affable hillbillies during a swimming accident.

In an interview with WickedInfo, Bowden described the film as follows:

Tucker and Dale is an exciting, unique movie that was really fun to be a part of. It’s about two lovable friends who get mistaken as evil crazy “hillbillies” by a group of young college kids when they take a camping trip. My character gets rescued by the two locals when there is a swimming accident – although Tucker and Dale are sweet kind-hearted guys, through the eyes of my friends they seem like evil killers. And similarly, through the eyes of Tucker and Dale, my friends seem crazed and violent. Therefore it turns into a kind of cat-and-mouse scenario with cool special effects and funny back and forth between the “eyes” of both groups.

Along with Bowden, Tucker and Dale VS. Evil stars “Firefly’s” Alan Tudyk and “Reapers” Tyler Labine, as the titular heroes Tucker and Dale, Chelan Simmons (Final Destination 3), Brandon Jay McLaren (“Harper’s Island”), Christie Laing (Scary Movie 4), and Sasha Craig (Dark Wolf). Zelda Rubinstein passed away today. The actress, best known for her portrayal of medium Tangina Barrons in the Poltergeist series, was taken off life support late last month after suffering lung and kidney failure while at Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles. She was 76.

Rubinstein acting credits also include Southland Tales, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Teen Witch, Anguish, Wishcraft, and David Kelly’s surreal small town TV drama “Picket Fences.”

Director Terry Gilliam sure didn’t pull any punches when discussing his thoughts on James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar with the A.V. Club.

The man behind such epic, often nightmarish, fantasies as Time Bandits, Brazil, and Twelve Monkeys told the entertainment news site that while he appreciated Cameron’s technical wizardry, the film itself had sucked donkey balls … or something like that.

Gilliam said:

Technically, it’s extraordinary work. And that’s where it sort of ends. We’ve seen the story before. We’ve seen so much of what’s been done there before, but I think he’s obviously moved the technology way ahead, to a point that who’s going to get the benefit from it is the real question. I think his system that he’s developed is obviously extraordinary, but you need these vast sums of money to create something like that.

The thing that always amazes me about Cameron is how he uses the camera. I’ve always been amazed by that, ever since I first saw his films. And he continues to do it. It’s a dynamic that’s quite extraordinary, but as far as the ideas and everything else, nothing surprised me.

What he’s done is so difficult. And that deserves praise for something. I don’t know if it’s necessary, is my problem. I occasionally would pull the glasses off and say, “Did the depth mean that much to me?” And it didn’t. But it’s very lush work.

It’s a good thing Cameron doesn’t have human feelings, otherwise such criticism would surely sting. Gilliam’s latest film is The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus which, ironically, also sucks donkey balls.

There’s been a lot of speculation over what director will take over Sony’s Spiderman reboot now that the studio has severed ties with Sam Raimi. While Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) is rumored to be topping the list, other names in the supposed mix include Wes Anderson (Fantastic Mr. Fox), David Fincher (Se7en), Nimrod Antal (Predators), and self-proclaimed King-of-the-World James Cameron (Avatar).

Cameron, however, is the first to go on record as not being interested in the Spidey franchise. He tells MTV:

It’s a little bit sloppy seconds, let’s face it. I haven’t gotten a phone call. I don’t expect to — certainly [not] after this interview. But if you’re thinking about it, it’s sloppy seconds. I’m not interested.

Cameron’s Avatar won a Golden Globe award last night for Best Motion Picture – Drama. The 55-year-old Oscar-winner also took home a Globe for Best Director.

In related news, Sam Raimi may be moving on to helm the World of Warcraft film. I’ll keep you posted.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is the star of the CBS program “Ghost Whisperer,” a paranormal-themed show for the over 80 demographic. The perky actress was on the Lopez Tonight show on Tuesday night to promote her new book The Day I Killed Cupid. Decked out in a hot pink mini-dress, Hewitt discussed her big ass and the joys of vaginal bling.

Hewitt tells George Lopez:

“Dexter” star Michael C. Hall made his battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma public today in a surprising statement to the press.

Hall says:

I feel fortunate to have been diagnosed with an imminently treatable and curable condition, and I thank my doctors and nurses for their expertise and care.

A spokesperson for the 38-year-old actor says the cancer is in complete remission and that Hall will continue treatment as planned. It was not made known when Hall was diagnosed nor at what Los Angeles based hospital.

Hall will begin to shoot season five of the hit Showtime show “Dexter” later this year. He is nominated for a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of serial killer Dexter Morgan and is scheduled to attend the ceremony on Sunday with his wife and costar Jennifer Carpenter.

Amanda Seyfried has left Jennifer’s Body behind and is moving on to Julianne Moore’s in the Studio Canal psychological thriller Chloe, a remake of the French film Nathalie. The 24-year-old actress plays a call-girl hired by Moore, 49, to seduce her husband and, consequently, report back on their kinky sexual escapades. Liam Neeson stars as Moore’s husband.

Seyfried—God bless her for not being prudish like Natalie Portman—goes nude for the part, showing off both her tit-tays and tush. She also gets freaky with a very milfy Moore in an emotionally intense lesbian scene.

Coincidentally, this is the film Liam Neeson was working on when his wife Natasha Richardson died after suffering a head injury while skiing in Quebec.

The 57-year-old Irish bastard is having an impressive run of roles opposite hot, young actresses willing to lose their clothes in indie fare. Prior to Chloe, Neeson starred as a creepy mortician out to torment a naked Christina Ricci in Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo’s After.Life.

Chloe is slated for release in early 2010. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group holds the North American rights.

The Twilight Saga’s Ashley Green is wearing nothing but body paint in a new ad campaign for beverage giant Sobe. The photo spread showcases Greene in a series of painted-on bikinis and will run in next month’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

Greene is no stranger to nudity. The 22-year-old actress had private nude photos of herself leaked on the web last year. Her Twilight costars Christian Serratos and Kristen Stewart have also gone in the buff. Serratos appeared in PETA’s ongoing “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign, while Stewart gets naked in the upcoming indie-drama Welcome to the Rileys.

Depressing news from director Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan camp. The supernatural thriller, which showcases a sex scene between stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, will utilize body doubles for the actresses. Portman, who showed off her lady lumps in the Wes Anderson short film Hotel Chevalier, is blaming porn sites and horny movie reviewers for her decision to forgo nudity.

Portman tells UK Elle magazine:

I’m definitely not a prude about sex or nudity, I just don’t want do something that will end up as a screen grab on a porn site so meanwhile I’m doing halfsies – I’m like, ‘I’ll show my butt but not my boobs.

It really depressed me that half of every review on the film [Hotel Chevalier] was about the nudity. It made me think I shouldn’t have done it. My issue is that I feel it takes something away from what you’re doing when the focus is put on the wrong thing. My picture ended up on porn sites, and that’s the dilemma.

Anyone who begins a sentence with “I’m definitely not a prude” is always a prude. Well, let’s just hope Kristina Anapau picks up Portman’s nudity slack. If not, then you can scratch this flick off your movie-watching agenda and use that money to buy a month’s membership to some hot interracial porn site.
