One night stands always lead to awkward feelings the morning after, especially if you wake up to find your huckleberry with their face bashed in and you’re bathed in enough blood splatter to give Dexter Morgan a chubby.

So is the setup to fledgling director Chris R. Notarile’s short film One Night Stand, starring 22-year-old newcomer Zoe Sloane.

Sloane will next be seen in Notarile’s upcoming full-length feature Daddy’s Girl and in indie-director Mike Nichols’ (Dead Calling) long-delayed Hansel & Gretal inspired thriller BreadCrumbs, opposite genre queens Alana Curry and Kristina Klebe.

Nortarile reportedly shot One Night Stand in less than three hours and for the cost of $100. No word on whether that included a reach-around/happy ending.

Universal Studios Hollywood and director/rocker Rob Zombie are urging all aspiring horror filmmakers to enter their scariest short in the “Halloween Horror Nights – Rob Zombie Film Competition.” The winner will have their film premiere on Chiller TV, collect a $1000, and receive a trip for two to the opening night of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Entries must be submitted on DVD and be anywhere from 90-seconds to 3-minutes long (sorry, guys, sex videos with your wife/girlfriend don’t count, no matter how short and frightening).

The “Halloween Horror Nights – Rob Zombie Film Competition” offers filmmakers an opportunity to have their scariest short film judged by a panel led by the multi-media horror auteur, rewarded with a premiere showing on Chiller TV, a posting on SyFy.com, a $1,000 cash prize and a trip for two to the opening night of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Contest entries will be accepted from July 7 through August 14, 2010. Prospective filmmakers are invited to submit short films from 90 seconds to three minutes in length on DVD (two copies of each film must be submitted). Selected films will be judged by Rob Zombie, members of Universal Studios Hollywood’s “Halloween Horror Nights” team and horror industry professionals. Criteria will be storytelling skill, originality and the degree of a “good scare.” The top 10 shorts will be posted online at Halloween Horror Nights from September 3–17, 2010 for public voting.

The winning film will be announced on September 17. In addition to the prize and the broadcast of the film, the winning filmmaker will be honored in front of celebrities, studio executives and media at the Eyegore Awards ceremony, which will kick off the 2010 Halloween Horror Nights event at Universal Studios Hollywood.

MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An eight-minute short film for director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Rebirth has hit the web. The dark and ultra-violent short provides real-world origin stories for killers Reptile and Baraka, and introduces Michael Jai White (Sucker Punch) as Jax and Jeri Ryan (”Star Trek Voyeur”) as Sonya Blade.

The clip also gives us a glimpse at Scorpion and includes a balls-out fight between Johnny Cage and Baraka. This is good shit.

While there is no official word on whether Warner Bros. will move forward with a Hard-R film adaptation of Midway’s popular Mortal Kombat arcade fighter, the studio did announce its plans to relaunch the franchise earlier this year (pending legal disputes).

Personally, I think this short alone has already pulled a fatality move on the 1995 adaptation by Paul W.S. Anderson.

If you’ve ever had to take a shit in a public restroom, you’ve probably worried about a roach crawling up your asshole and/or contracting AIDs from the toilet seat.

Well, now, Spanish filmmaker Daniel Barosa gives us something new to worry about in his latest short La Rubia Del Bano (The Bathroom Blonde).

Hmm. All-in-all, that blonde chick is pretty hot … for me to poop on!

Award-winning director Drew Daywalt has written and directed some of the most twisted and disturbingly creepy film shorts in horror (Bedfellows is particularly frightening). Daywalt’s latest is a fun little shocker called Suicide Girl, starring sexy 24-year-old newcomer Brooke Wolfe (pictured above).

Daywalt is one of the founding members behind the indie-horror troupe Fewdio. He recently completed a 17-episode web series entitled Camera Obscura for MGW Entertainment (release date still pending).

Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures has signed a seven-figure deal with 30-year-old Uruguayan director Fede Alverez to helm a giant robot invasion film based on his short Ataque de Panico (Panic Attack). The short, which had been circulating online, quickly drew the interest of Hollywood studios looking to produce the next low-budget blockbuster (think Paranormal Activity or District 9).

Alverez, a commercials director in his homeland, filmed the four minute 48 second short for a reported $300-to-$500. Raimi will mentor Alverez during the production much like Peter Jackson did with Neill Blomkamp on District 9. Ghost House is now looking for a writer to pen the script.

I dunno. I like the short, I’m not buying it. I think this project was already in place and this whole little-filmmaker-that-could story is just part of a very savvy marketing campaign designed to rally up the geek interest. What do you guys think?

SLAYER!!!

If you love your mom, but hate strippers, hookers, ballet dancers, busty waitresses, party girls, biker babes, sexy massage therapists, and really just anyone with boobs and a vagina, you will eat up Slayer’s new animated/live action short Playing with Dolls. The twenty minute film made its debut on MySpace Video and will also be available on the Deluxe Edition of the thrash band’s upcoming disc World Painted Blood. Directed by comic artist Mark Brooks, the short follows a brutal serial killer during a ruthless murder spree.

The video is beyond slick and features a deliciously fucked up storyline that calls to mind the 1982 slasher classic Pieces and the hilarious 1990 horror-comedy Frankenhooker (minus the laughs). Gotta warn you: it’s gruesome stuff. You may want to view it alone. Personally, I waited for Mrs. Muertos to go to the spa before watching it.

Slayer (I mean SLAYER!!!!!) unleashes World Painted Blood on Nov. 3.
