Liv Tyler has signed on to star in director Ti West’s (House of the Devil) new sci-fi, psychological nightmare The Side Effect. Tyler will play the role of Catherine Rigby, a woman who inexplicably becomes pregnant while living alone in space for months as a test subject for a global pharmaceutical company.

She tells Deadline:

[Ti West] is a super-talented exciting young filmmaker. The role of Rigby is a fantastic character within a great thriller and I am looking forward to sinking my teeth into the part.

The Side Effect marks Tyler’s return to horror since starring in the truly frightening home-invasion slasher The Strangers in 2008. Additional genre creds include the Michael Bay disaster-thriller Armageddon,  Uni and Marvel’s 2008 redo of The Incredible Hulk, James Gunn’s superhero comedy Super and, of course, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Side Effect, which will most likely be retitled as Hollywood big shot Steven Soderbergh is shooting a film with the same name, will be shopped at this year’s European Film Market.

Dimension Films have released the first official trailer for Spanish director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego’s found-footage sci-fi frightener Apollo 18. The film marks Gallego’s English language debut and is produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter).

The synopsis reads:

Officially, Apollo 17, launched December 17th, 1972 was the last manned mission to the moon. But a year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense.

What you are about to see is the actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission. While NASA denies its authenticity, others say it’s the real reason we’ve never gone back to the moon.

Man, I’m so sick of all these Apollo conspiracies. Everyone knows man has never been to the moon. The whole landing was shot on the same sound stage they used for “The Bob Newhart Show.” Jeez, c’mon, people, don’t be so gullible.

Apollo 18 lands in theaters on April 22.

In space, no one can hear you scream. In your living room, it will be an entirely different story when Electronic Arts finally releases Visceral Games’ sequel to their chart-topping horror-survival game Dead Space. E.A. has issued a press release announcing that production on Dead Space 2 has officially begun and will feature new weapons, Necromorph monsters, and plot twists.

Dead Space 2 executive producer Steve Papoutsis says:

We’re thrilled to jump back into the series, making the next chapterin Isaac’s journey. The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of Necromorphs that need killing. In Dead Space 2, not everything is exactly as it seems. Expect plot twists that will surprise you and a huge cast of twisted, disgusting monsters that are sure to scare the daylights out of you.

Nick Earl, senior VP and group general manager for E.A., adds:

Like so many gamers worldwide, we love the Dead Space franchise and are very excited to announce a new game in the series. Visceral Games is quickly becoming known for delivering high-quality, action-packed games. Dead Space 2 is on target to deliver a jaw-dropping experience gamers won’t soon forget.

Dead Space 2 will be available for the PS3, XBox 360, and PC. More information to come.

Disney has announced plans to remake its 1979 classic space-adventure The Black Hole. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Mouse House has entrusted the high-profile project to the duo behind its upcoming sci-fi actioner Tron: Legacy: director Joseph Kosinski and producer Sean Bailey. Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans) is attached to write.

The Black Hole was Disney’s first PG rated film and, budgeted at $26 million, its most expensive production at the time. The original story involved a group of explorers who board a marooned ship hovering near a black hole and encounter a mad scientist and his army of robots. The cast included Anthony Perkins (Psycho, Edge of Sanity), Robert Forster (D-War, Maniac Cop 3), Yvette Mimieux (Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell) and Ernest Borgnine (Gattaca, Escape from New York).

Disney isn’t saying much at this point, but Maximilian–the original flick’s big menacing red robot–will be back (my inner-child just got a boner).
