Katharine McPhee & Sara Paxton Reeled in for ‘Shark Night 3-D’

Director David R. Ellis (The Final Destination 3-D) has reeled in former “American Idol” contestant Katharine McPhee and Last House on the Left rape victim Sara Paxton for his upcoming creature-feature Shark Night 3-D. McPhee and Paxton join a cast that includes Chris Carmack (The Butterfly Effect 3), Alyssa Diaz (Red Dawn), Joel David Moore (Avatar), Dustin Milligan (The Messengers) and Sinqua Walls (Savage County).

Shark Night 3-D follows a group of college friends as they encounter man-eating sharks while vacationing at a lake house (I’m guessing bull sharks). Cameras are set to roll on the project later this month in Shreveport, LA.

I’m curious to see if the film will go for genuine scares or play up the kitschy factor ala Piranha 3-D. Either way, adding a porn star to the project couldn’t hurt.

Sara Paxton makes a strong pro-3D argument.

Paxton, who has a string of family-friendly features, broke out of her good girl image by taking the lead in 2009’s brutally violent—and so-much-better-than-the-original—remake of Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left. She can next be seen in director Ti West’s upcoming haunted-hotel thriller The Innkeepers.

McPhee is best known for placing second on Fox TV’s “American Idol” competition. Her only stroke-worthy turn on film has been opposite Anna Faris in the must-see comedy The House Bunny.

McPhee and Paxton aren’t the only babes starring in a shark flick. Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry and newcomer Lorraine Nicholson (Jack’s daughter) will face off against maneaters of their own in their respective films Dark Tide and Soul Surfer.
