Genre babe Mary Elizabeth Winstead has finally secured her first starring role in a studio film. She, along with Joel Edgerton, will headline Universal Pictures upcoming remake of John Carpenter’s The Thing, set to start shooting on March 15 in Toronto.

Winstead will play a PH.D. candidate who ventures to Antarctica to join a Norwegian research team’s investigation of a frozen spaceship trapped under ice. When an alien organism attacks the crew, she and Edgerton’s helicopter pilot character are left to fend for themselves.

Winstead has starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, Final Destination 3, The Ring 2, and the Dimension Films remake Black Christmas.
