Warner Bros. released today a trailer for The Desolation of Smaug, part two in Peter Jackson’s new Hobbit trilogy. The two-minute clip provides a glimpse at elf hero Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and introduces new woodland elf Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly). The dragon Smaug is also teased.
All-in-all, The Desolation of Smaug looks far more exciting than last year’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Snorefest. The film opens in 3D and once again at 48 frames-per-second on Dec. 13.
Christina Ricci is set to star in Lifetime’s upcoming biopic based on the notorious life of Lizzie Borden, the acquitted suspect in the 1892 hatchet murders of her parents Andrew and Abby Borden. The film is directed by Nick Gomez (“Flash Forward”) and produced by Sony Pictures Television.
Ricci’s last genre project was 2009’s After.Life, in which she toplessly played the victim of an automobile accident who wakes up in the morgue, but is told by the mortician that she is dead.
Ricci’s creds include a string of memorable frighteners and thrillers, including Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, Wes Craven’s Cursed, the sexy abduction drama Black Snake Moan and the biopic Monster, based on serial killer Aileen Wuornos and her lesbian lover.
Lionsgate has released a new trailer for writer/director Scott Walker’s Frozen Ground. In theaters Aug. 23, the film is based on the true story of Robert Hansen, an Anchorage-based serial killer who over a 12-year span murdered 24 women by hunting them down like game in the Alaskan wilderness.
Frozen Ground stars John Cusack as Hansen, Nicolas Cage as the detective who brings him to justice, Radha Mitchell as his wife and Vanessa Hudgens as the teen stripper/prostitute who managed to escape from Hansen after being abducted, raped, and sexually assaulted with a hammer.
According to Clatto informants who caught early screenings of the film, Frozen Ground is a solid thriller but sadly shies away from exploring the sexual depravity fueling Hansen’s crimes. Personally, I blame your immaturity over nudity for the filmmakers decision to deprive of us of boobies.
Genre stunner Jacqui Holland is toplining director John Kearns’ Dead Ringer, an erotic horror thriller about a psychotic, hopefully hyper-sexual, woman obsessed with an up-and-coming actor who resembles her deceased husband (Timothy Woodward, Jr.).
The film co-stars Kelly Ryan (Grindhouse) and Ross Bagley (Independence Day) and features cameos by Todd Bridges (“Diff’rent Strokes”) and Eric Roberts (The Expendables).

Holland is best known for her role as the kindly topless stripper in the Lionsgate rom-com My Best Friend’s Girl. Her genre creds include the Full Moon Features horror-comedy Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver and the slashers Sorority Party Massacre and Monsters in the Woods, in which she goes nude.
Anchor Bay has set a July 30 release date for writer and director Christopher Roosevelt’s feature film debut The Demented, an outbreak thriller starring stunners Kayla Ewell (“The Vampire Diaries”), Brittney Alger (21 jump Street) and horror-fav Sarah Butler (I Spit On Your Grave).
The Demented centers on six college friends attempting to survive a viral outbreak caused by a terrorist missile attack on a town near the vacation home they happen to be staying at. Making matters worse are the infected townsfolk out to feast on survivors.
Jessica Morris, the topless star of the 2008 comedy hit Role Models, toplines Raging Bull Entertainment and Khoury A. Marriot Productions’ new supernatural thriller A Haunting In Thornby. Production on the film wrapped in May and it is now slated for a November release.
A Haunting in Thornby follows a married couple and their young son as they move from Los Angeles to a small Northern California town after experiencing a traumatic event. But, things only get worse when “a century’s old secret that threatens to destroy the family begins to reveal itself in a horrifying fashion.
Morris made her horror debut in the 2000 teen slasher Bloody Murder. Additional creds include the indie frighteners The Dead Want Women and Decadent Evil II and the fantasy film Fading of the Cries. She is best known, however, for playing Linda the topless teacher in Role Models, starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott.
A trailer for the FilmDistrict and Blumhouse Productions sequel Insidious: Chapter 2 has gone online. The film finds Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson reprising their roles as Renai and Josh Lambert, the tormented parents of a once haunted child (Ty Simpkins) whose demon now threatens the entire family.
Insidious director James Wan is back at the helm with a script by Leigh Whannell. Co-stars include Barbara Hershey as Josh Lambert’s mother Lorraine, Lin Shaye as paranormal investigator Elise Rainier, Jocelin Donahue as young Renai Lambert and Danielle Bisutti as a very creepy ghost. The film opens on Sept. 13.

Image Entertainment has released the trailer for Evidence, a found-footage frightener starring Radha Mitchell and Stephen Moyer as police detectives attempting to put together a portrait of a mass murderer by utilizing his victims’ camcorders, flip cams, and smart-phones.
Set in desert outside of Los Angeles, Evidence is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi’s (The 4th Kind) and written by newcomer John Swetnam. Co-stars include Torrey Devitto (”Pretty Little Liars”), Harry Lennix (“Dollhouse”), Caitlin Stasey (Tomorrow, When the War Began) and Nolan Gerard Funk (Deadgirl).
“Spartacus: Blood and Sand” star Erin Cummings has joined Dark Sky Films and Glass Eye Pix’s upcoming werewolf thriller Late Phases. The film marks the English-language debut of Spanish filmmaker Adrián García Bogliano (Penumbra, Cold Sweat).

Late Phases stars Nick Damici (We Are What We Are) as a man who moves into a neighborhood under attack by werewolves. Cummings and “Once Upon a Time” actor Ethan Embry co-star as a married couple living in the community. The film is now shooting in New York.
Cummings is best known for playing Sura, Spartacus’ doomed wife, on season one of the Starz original series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” and for her role as secret agent Hel (pictured) in Rick Jacobson’s Bitch Slap. She can currently be seen in the Michael Shannon crime thriller The Iceman.
